help build the story of indira

Indira Cinema is not simply reopening as a cinema.

Built in 1948 and dark for years, Indira is being reimagined as a living cultural space in the heart of Kolkata, bringing together cinema, heritage, literature, music, theatre, exhibitions, workshops, food, ideas, and people under one Art Deco roof. We want to build a space where something is always happening, and we are looking for someone who can help tell the world about it.

As a Marketing & Communications Intern, you will shape how Indira is seen, understood, and experienced. You will work on real campaigns, events, social media, storytelling, PR, partnerships, and cultural programs.

You will also see how an idea becomes a cultural space, and how that space becomes a community. Very few people get to watch that happen from the inside, and fewer still get to shape how it is told.

what you will do

This is not an internship where you watch from the side, or schedule posts somebody else wrote. You will be expected to think, create, experiment, and take ownership.

who we are looking for

Someone curious, creative, confident, and excited by the possibility of building something new.

You do not need to be a student, and you do not need a background in Communications, Marketing, PR or Media. Students of any discipline are very welcome, and so is anyone else: a writer, a photographer, someone between things, someone with a full life already who wants to spend a few months inside a building coming back to life. Previous experience is a plus, not a precondition.

Beyond that, three things matter more to us than anything on a CV:

what you get

Real work. Actual cultural, marketing, media, and event projects, not assignments invented to keep an intern busy.

Credit and a portfolio. Named credit on published work, and permission to show what you made in your CV, portfolio, or professional profiles.

Mentorship and a network. Practical guidance in marketing, communications, and building a creative career, and the chance to meet artists, filmmakers, writers, photographers, designers, and cultural practitioners.

The view from behind the scenes. How screenings, exhibitions, performances, and campaigns actually get made, including the parts nobody posts about.

A certificate and a recommendation. A Certificate of Completion, and for interns who contribute meaningfully, a personalised Letter of Recommendation.

What comes next. Strong-performing interns get priority consideration for future paid and freelance work. Exceptional interns may be invited to continue with Indira full-time.

the working arrangement

We would rather be precise about this than have you find out later.

Where. In person, at Indira Cinema, 2 Indra Roy Road, Kolkata 700025. This is not a remote role. Most of the work only exists inside the building.

How long. Rolling start: begin whenever you are available. We ask for a minimum of three months.

Which five days. This is a five-day week. But Indira is busiest when the city is free, so your two days off move with the schedule rather than sitting on a Saturday and Sunday. If you are running an event on a Sunday, your days off that week fall midweek. Those days are agreed with you in advance, never sprung on you. Occasional evening work comes with events you are directly involved in.

Pay. This is an unpaid internship, and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up. Indira is a small, family-run operation building its team for the first time in years, and we are not yet open. What we can offer instead is real responsibility, real credit, and a real look at how a cultural space gets made.

And for an intern who proves themselves, a paid role is a genuine possibility rather than a polite line at the end of a job advertisement. We are growing, and when we hire we would rather hire someone we have already worked with and trust.
